Difference between Mentoring and Coaching in Education

“Thank you so much. I don’t feel lost anymore, said one of the teachers during a PLC (Professional Learning Community) teacher in-service meeting.

As I was reading the articles about the different roles that mentors and coaches in education have in our schools, I came to realize that they are very much alike.  The only major difference is that mentors are more likely to be teachers helping novice or non-novice teachers.  Whereas, coaching “is far more formal than mentoring, and has a more expansive end goal” (Aguilar, 2017).  Coaches still meet with teachers individually, but they are assigned to more than one teacher.

Overall, coaches and mentors in education work as facilitators.  They have very important tasks/responsibilities to accomplish.  After all, they are working directly with the teachers---to try and make their jobs more enjoyable and easier (Carr, et.al., n.d.). They both have the same outcome and goal which is to help the students achieve academic success and reach their full potential through the teachers. I always say, “Happy teachers, happy students”!
